My Creative Work
My life is devoted to originating new innovations in the world. My first job out of college was to program one of the earliest graphical user interfaces on PCs, which until then only presented a DOS prompt!
Reading Neal Stephenson's 1991 cyberpunk classic Snow Crash I was inspired to make it real and in 1995 founded the Contact Consortium to help bring virtual worlds to the Internet and wrote my 1997 book Avatars, now considered a classic text of the early Metaverse.
It was then time to pursue my passion for space kindled by watching the Apollo XI landing on the moon in 1969. I formed a company of virtual world designers which was hired by NASA and starting in 1998 we simulated space missions such as crewed habitats on Mars

The Origin of Life
How did life begin on the Earth? How can life start elsewhere in the cosmos and how common might it be? How can complex life emerge from simple early cells and are we alone in the universe? These are questions which fascinated me as a teenager and today I am working with world-renowned scientists and teams to begin to "crack the code of life's beginning."
